Are you inspired by invention? Is problem solving through teamwork in your DNA? Do you like the idea of seeing how your work impacts the bigger picture? Answer yes to any of these and you’ll fit right in here at Amazon Robotics. We are a smart team of doers who work passionately to apply cutting edge advances in robotics and software to solve real-world challenges that will transform our customers’ experiences. We invent new improvements every day. We are Amazon Robotics and we will give you the tools and support you need to invent with us in ways that are rewarding, fulfilling, and fun.

Amazon Robotics empowers a smarter, faster, more consistent customer experience through automation. Amazon Robotics automates fulfillment center operations using various methods of robotic technology including autonomous mobile robots, sophisticated control software, language perception, power management, computer vision, depth sensing, machine learning, object recognition, and semantic understanding of commands. Amazon Robotics has a dedicated focus on research and development to continuously explore new opportunities to extend its product lines into new areas.

Amazon Robotics internship/co-op/full-time opportunities will be based out of the Greater Boston Area in our two state-of-the-art facilities in Westborough, MA and North Reading, MA. Both campuses provide a unique opportunity to have direct access to robotics testing labs and manufacturing facilities.

We are looking for a bright and motivated student who is excited to work on complex, real-world challenges. We are interested in someone who has experience using human factors and ergonomics analysis tools, methods, and thresholds. The ideal candidate would be familiar with the ISO 11228 standard (Ergonomics - Manual Handling) and have experience conducting ergonomic evaluations with common tools and methods, such as the NIOSH lifting equation, ACGIH threshold limit values, Recommended Cumulative Rest Allowance (RCRA) method, and the Liberty Mutual Manual Material Handling tables. We are also seeking candidates who have experience with digital human modeling tools, such as Siemens Jack or Process Simulate, and wearable motion capture systems for ergonomic analysis.

Key job responsibilities
Your role will entail supporting assessments of manual material handling tasks for new Amazon Robotics products, and helping to guide design decisions that ensure associate safety and comfort. You will help to identify fundamental questions pertaining to human capabilities and tolerances in a variety of work environments, and will support studies that directly impact design decisions. You will provide human factors/ergonomics input to teams across Amazon Robotics, such as Hardware Engineering, Safety, Systems Engineering, and Operations teams. You will work closely with our Worldwide Health and Safety organization to gain feedback on designs and help shape our analysis methodologies.

Your responsibilities include:
  • Collaborating and designing work processes and workspaces that adhere to human factors and ergonomics standards worldwide
  • Contributing to comprehensive assessments of workstations and processes covering biomechanical, physiological, and psychophysical demands
  • Continuously striving to gain in-depth knowledge of your profession, as well as branch out to learn about intersecting fields, such as robotics and mechatronics
  • Supporting the development of internal guidelines, process docs, and standards to broaden our impact and improve the clarity of our methods for the hardware design organization
  • Occasionally traveling to various sites to perform prototype assessments and gain operational feedback, likely 2-3 trips over a 6 month co-op assignment

About the team
At Amazon Robotics, we create high tech products that help associates to work faster, safer, and with greater satisfaction. In order to best serve our associate customers, we need to incorporate ergonomic considerations into the design cycle for associate facing hardware development projects. Our team conducts Human Factors and Ergonomic evaluations early and often, in order to minimize injury potential and enhance the overall associate experience.
  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD in Human Factors, Ergonomics, Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Life Sciences (e.g. Biology, Physiology, Kinesiology, Biomechanics)
  • Experience conducting laboratory studies in human performance using motion capture technology, electromyography, metabolic carts, etc.
  • Skilled using Excel (or more advanced tools such as MATLAB or Python) for data manipulation and analysis
  • Experience conducting Human Factors/Ergonomics research that has resulted in peer reviewed publications and conference presentations.
